It seems that the fate that has befallen many other types of pets is now running rampant in the boxer owner arena. Unwanted pets are a problem. Unwanted boxers are an ever growing problem. What is behind this increase in abandoned boxers syndrome? Why are so many boxer owners leaving behind or throwing out their once-prized pets?

All across the United States of America anyone interested in Boxers will notice how many rescue associations there are for this particular breed. One might be tempted to think that the Boxer is a difficult kind of dog to take care of but the truth is quite the reverse. So why are there so many?

The problem lies not with the dog in itself but in some of the breeders and uneducated owners. Boxers are popular dogs and breeding them these days is big business. And therein lies the problem. It is quite astounding to think that buying a Boxer, or any other breed of dog for that matter, is as easy as buying a packet of cigarettes. Many Boxer breeders couldn’t care less about the breed and only love the money that the dogs create. This means that they sell Boxer puppies to absolutely anybody without first screening the potential buyer or making sure they know what they are getting into. The unscrupulous boxer breeder limits his explanation to saying how good the dogs are and what a great idea it would be to buy one. Showing a Boxer pup to a child is practically a sure fire sell, so why bother mentioning the training needed? The new owners go home very happily with their new acquisition and probably spend a fantastic afternoon watching their child play with the new puppy. The problems however, will most often begin the morning after and within a few short months lead to the pup being abandoned.

There is another common misconception regarding the Boxer that also adds to the problem of abandonment. Because of their unfortunate name and physical characteristics, Boxers are often bought as guard dogs. People who want an aggressive dog that barks and bites try to train them to act so and when they realize that it is an almost impossible task they simply discard the dog on some deserted highway. This happens more and more these days as personal security becomes more important to people. Most breeders do nothing to change this misconception and greedily count their money.

Boxer dog rescue associations are constantly fighting to get the message across to potential buyers that they need to learn about the breed before they buy. These days there is a wealth of information available and to plead innocence is just a very poor excuse. Most Boxers are abandoned by ignorant people who can’t be bothered to train their new acquisition, or are deterred from footing vet’s bills due to the high price tag. This eventually leads to Boxers not being spayed and having more pups, which in turn leads to even more dogs abandoned or even killed.

The only real possibility the stop the above from happening is for new laws to be passed to make it harder for people to buy a dog without the proper screening. In fact, in a perfect world it would be impossible to ‘buy’ any kind of dog and only through ‘adoption’ would it be possible. Obviously, there would be a lot of benefits to this but also disadvantages, as you can imagine what greedy breeders would do if they weren’t able to sell their wares.
