Like most breeds of dogs, Boxers tend to have a certain personality or set of mannerisms. Though it’s not fair in people or in boxers to overly generalize, there are a few things that we can safely say about the kinds of things you may expect in the temperament of your Boxer.

The Boxer’s temperament can ably be described in just one word: Playful. Whether it is a puppy or a dog that has seen many years, a Boxer’s one true love in life is playing. It can never get enough of running and jumping and playing with other members of the family, even when you are exhausted. It is also a loyal family dog who likes nothing more than being with the people it loves and who it senses love him. They have an amazing ability to make their owners fall about laughing time and time again, even when you get home at night exhausted from work he will be there to put a smile on your lips and to help you forget life’s many pressures.

Boxers are also huge showoffs and love nothing more than wagging and wiggling in front of an appreciative crowd. Among the many tricks he knows there is the Boxer dance known as ‘kidney beaning’. This is when he turns himself into a semi circle and runs around as fast as he can. When he stops to look at you, you can almost see the big smile on his drooling face.

Boxers are also known barkers but their favorite way of getting your attention is with the ‘woo-woo’. This isn’t exactly a bark in the traditional sense but more of a grunt. The meaning of the ‘woo-woo’ is simple. Your Boxer is saying ‘look at me now and pay attention’.

Boxers are really fun dogs to own but they are not for everyone. Some people want their dog to sit at their feet and sleep all day. This is not the Boxer. If you want that kind of dog then a miniature or toy dog would be best suited to you. Boxers have boundless energy and don’t want to waste their mornings or afternoons with ‘boring’ sleep. Unfortunately Boxers have the bad habit of thinking that they are toy dogs and that their owners want them sitting in their laps. Having an 80+ pound dog in your lap is not much fun, sometimes. For the owner that is. Boxers love it though. Another problem with choosing a Boxer is that they are sometimes quite naughty. They will think nothing of chewing shoes, furniture, carpets or anything else they can get their paws. This is because the Boxer is a very intelligent animal and needs constant mental stimulation. It needs to be taught what is right and what is wrong, but if left to his own devices he could wreak havoc on the house.

If you have children then the Boxer is a perfect dog to get because they are gentle and caring and genuinely love kids. However, small children could easily be knocked over by accident as Boxers only know two speeds: sitting down and dashing around at full pelt.

Another famous characteristic of the Boxer is their inbred stubbornness. When they don’t want to do something they can be worse than mules. Imagine if they always jump up on the sofa or somewhere else by themselves. Well at times that could easily change and they would need you to help them.

To recap, the Boxer is a happy, boisterous animal that needs an owner to sacrifice time and energy to giving it plenty of love and affection. It can be hard work keeping a Boxer, but the love he returns is more often than not well worth it.
